Newcomers to the state have 30 days after establishing residency to obtain an Alabama driver's license. If you have a valid out-of-state license, you only have to take an eye test and have proof of residency. First-time drivers must also take a written exam and a driving test, and those under 19 years of age must have a student enrollment form. All applicants must have their Social Security card and first-time drivers must have a certified birth certificate. The fee for taking the written test is $5 and must be paid in cash. Licenses are $20, and are issued for four years, expiring four years from the date of purchase. Driver's tests are given at the Driver's License Bureau; all fees are paid and renewals are handled in the license office of your individual county

Newcomers to the state must obtain their Alabama automobile license tag within 30 days of establishing residency. Tags can be purchased at the Probate Judge's Office in Colbert County and at the License Commissioner's Office in Lauderdale County. Call for details on required information to obtain your tags. After the initial purchase, tags for passenger cars and pickups are purchased January through October, according to the initial of your last name. (All other tags must be purchased in October and November)

Voter Registration:

To vote, you must be a citizen of the United States, 18 years of age, mentally sound, and not under conviction of a felony. Voter registration must be completed 10 days before any election to vote in that election. You may register to vote at the Board of Registrar's Office, the Driver's License Office, and certain other government agencies.
